The two J-shaped curves (Nieman, 1994; Glesson, 2006) show the effect of exercise load and volume on upper respiratory tract infection risk. The S-shaped curve (Malm, 2006) also indicates that elite athletes are an exception to this rule. By increasing the load and volume of training, upper respiratory tract infection risk will be decreased [37].
